Collaborative Materials Show How to Ride out the Storm (Plus Other Disasters)

Natural and human-made disasters—including fires, tornadoes, flooding, earthquakes, hurricanes, and terrorist attacks—can strike anywhere and anytime. Neither Mother Nature nor terrorists provide any warning.

To help people ride out the financial storm that such disasters can bring, the American Red Cross teamed up with NEFE to provide the following important information:

  • Disaster Recovery: A Guide to Financial Issues, a 32-page booklet, was compiled by the two organizations and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants in the year after the September 11 terrorist attacks. This resource helps survivors of natural and human-made disasters regain financial balance by suggesting steps to take immediately after a disaster, what to do in the following weeks and months, and how to plan for the future.
  • Disasters and Financial Planning: A Guide to Preparedness. The booklet can help an individual prepare for a disaster by providing suggestions on how to protect your family’s health, life, and property with adequate insurance, plan financially for the possibility of a job loss or disability, and safeguard your important financial and legal records.
  • NEFE and the American Red Cross also collaborated on two booklets focused on natural disaster preparation and recovery. Before disaster strikes ... How to make sure you’re financially prepared to deal with a natural disaster offers tips and checklists related to protecting property, taking inventory, purchasing insurance, preparing an evacuation box, and setting aside emergency funds in anticipation of a disaster. After disaster strikes ... How to recover financially from a natural disaster helps affected individuals sort through the financial aftermath of a catastrophe by reconstructing lost records, notifying creditors and employers, filing insurance claims, obtaining grants and loans, and identifying tax reductions.

“This project started out in the early 1990s as one of the first public education activities of NEFE outside of the High School Financial Planning Program,” said Brent Neiser, CFP®, NEFE director of Strategic Programs and Alliances. “We tripled the size of the material to include the human factors of disaster in addition to property considerations. It’s a comprehensive new way to look at financial aspects of natural and manmade disasters post-9/11 and in the wake of Hurricane Katrina,” he explained.
