According to a familiar parable, “Teach people to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime.” Likewise, if you teach people some basic financial concepts, they’ll become more self-sufficient and will share their blessings with their church and community.

That is the spirit behind Adult Financial Mentoring, a 64-page guide produced by the Salvation Army in collaboration with the National Endowment for Financial Education.

Designed for use by Salvation Army workers as they counsel clients, the booklet provides tips, ideas, and information to get people in need back on the right financial track. It addresses a variety of personal finance issues—employment and earnings, budgeting and spending, credit, banking, and short- and long-term financial planning—that can help people from all walks of life.

“This booklet has universal appeal,” said Brent Neiser, CFP®, NEFE director of Collaborative Programs. “It captures the essence of good financial education—that if you apply certain money-management principles to your own life, you can overcome any challenge.”

When the booklet was first published in 2006, approximately 55,000 copies were printed and distributed to Salvation Army facilities throughout the United States. According to Sharon Barber at Salvation Army National Headquarters, the booklet has been well received by staff members and their clients.

“We’ve had numerous calls and e-mails from staff wanting more copies of the booklet, and people who know about it are telling others,” she said. “It’s a great resource because it puts the right information in the hands of the people who need it.”
