The decision to go to college can cause confusion because of the associated tasks, including applying for admission; obtaining financial aid; paying for tuition, room, board, and books; and meeting ordinary living expenses.
To help first-generation Hispanic teens who are pursuing college through that maze, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and the LULAC National Educational Service Centers (LNESC) worked with NEFE to publish College, Money & Tuition: A Financial Guide for Success.
The booklet is “an information source that will provide LNESC clients and their parents with the materials necessary to understand the role money and financial planning take in post-secondary education and immediately beyond,” said Mary J. Schultz, project manager for NEFE’s Collaborative Programs department.
In 56 information-filled pages, the booklet offers quick tips, useful resources, and worksheets related to selecting a college, considering alternative paths after high school, finding different types of financial aid, and managing personal finances.
The collaboration yielded 29,000 copies of the booklet, which contains a special message to parents. “The unique feature of this project is the letter in Spanish to parents located at the end of the booklet,” Schultz said. “This is the first project in which we’ve done a Spanish component to parents.” This component, which includes a side-by-side English translation, includes guidance for parents about financing, loans, and other financial challenges.
