To encourage Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (BBBSA) volunteers to introduce their Little Brothers and Little Sisters to the world of money, NEFE and BBBSA produced a 40-page booklet, Money Magic: A Guide for Big Brothers Big Sisters Volunteers.
Money Magic provides volunteers with ideas, activities, and tools to help their Little Brother or Sister—and even the volunteer, as well—become more financially savvy. Topics in the booklet run the gamut from knowing the difference between self-worth and net worth to money-earning tips and goal-oriented saving strategies.
According to Brent Neiser, CFP®, director of Collaborative Programs at NEFE, the project was designed to make financial literacy an active component of the mentoring relationship between a caring adult and a disadvantaged youth.
“It presents the perfect opportunity for volunteers to mentor youth who are engaging in commerce and teach kids about money,” said Neiser, who is a former Big Brother himself.
“Money is important to everyone, including kids, so we saw the booklet as a great way to provide volunteers with ideas for teaching financial concepts to their Little Brothers and Sisters in a fun, easy way,” said Karen Mudd, director of development at BBBSA national headquarters in Philadelphia. “As we’ve learned over the years, a little time spent with a youngster can work big magic in transforming a child’s life.”
During the project development, E*TRADE Bank reviewed the booklet and provided funding assistance, enabling the printing of 103,000 copies.
