As director of the High School Financial Planning Program® (HSFPP) for the National Endowment for Financial Education® (NEFE®), Susan Sharkey continues NEFE’s legacy of providing quality learning resources that empower teens and adults to make intentional financial decisions through every stage of life. She joined NEFE in 2010 to oversee the HSFPP, a program that annually reaches over 850,000 teens across the country.
Susan regularly collaborates on national financial literacy initiatives, including developing a national teacher training model with the Jump$tart Coalition, revising the national Jump$tart Financial Literacy Standards, creating a Financial Capability Guide for Communities with a White House task force and working with the University of Arizona to create MoneyTeach.org, an online community connecting financial educators to instructional resources. Currently, she serves as president of the Colorado Jump$tart Coalition and on the national Jump$tart Coalition Education Committee. She has facilitated financial literacy, strategic planning and instructional design workshops as well as presented on a variety of topics related to financial education.
Susan’s career began as a business educator in Wisconsin school districts and community colleges, where she reached learners from ages 5 to 85. Prior to joining NEFE, Susan worked for the Worldwide Instructional Design System (WIDS), consulting with colleges, school districts and corporations to develop competency-based learning and training programs. She also has experience as a medical office manager, the executive director of a nonprofit lake association, contributor to Wisconsin’s state academic standards for business and certified work-based skills standards, and president of the Wisconsin Business Education Association. Her community activities have included school board president, Green Lake Conservancy Foundation board, city park and recreation committee, church council, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. In all of her paid and volunteer experiences, Susan continues to guide others in mindful decision making and intentional planning.
Susan received a Master of Science Degree in business education from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, a Distance Education Certificate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) designation through the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE®).
