DENVER—The National Endowment for Financial Education® (NEFE®) and the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) are proud to announce the winners of the 2013 RTDNA/NEFE Excellence in Personal Finance Reporting Award. As part of the two organizations’ ongoing efforts to encourage radio, television and online news outlets to report on personal finance issues, three winners have been recognized for their outstanding work.

Radio: Uri Berliner, senior business editor, National Public Radio

Series: Dollar for Dollar

Berliner has been with NPR since 1999 and has supervised much of NPR’s coverage on the financial crisis, the auto industry, energy and the workplace. Berliner has helped to build Planet Money, a prize-winning multimedia team that covers the global economy. He has been a Neiman Fellow at Harvard and won an Edward R. Murrow Award in 2008 for his reporting on the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Television: Don Dare, reporter/anchor, WATE-TV Knoxville, TN

Series: 6 On Your Side: Debt Issues, Options and Answers

Dare has been reporting for more than 40 years, including stints in Nashville, St. Louis and Miami, and has been at WATE-TV in Knoxville since 1996. He is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle and has won numerous awards from many organizations, including the National Press Club, the Society of Professional Journalists, and has won the Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting.

Online: Blake Ellis, senior editor, CNNMoney.com

Series: Financial Challenges Facing Same-Sex Couples

Ellis is a personal finance writer with CNNMoney.com in New York. Her same-sex marriage coverage earned her a first place Excellence in Online Journalism Award from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association this year. She also has received awards from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers and the Newswomen’s Club of New York. Ellis joined CNNMoney.com in 2009.

Each winner will receive a $1,000 prize and complimentary registration and travel accommodations to the 2013 Excellence in Journalism convention—the national gathering of RTDNA, the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, in Anaheim, Calif. The winners also will be featured panelists in a session where they will break down their winning entries and share the key reporting tools and best practices they used to add immediate depth to their reporting.

The RTDNA/NEFE Excellence in Personal Finance Reporting Award is presented in connection with the Money Matters financial reporting resource, a tool developed through a partnership between NEFE and RTDNA to help journalists better cover stories about financial issues.
