DENVER—Got a friend, significant other, co-worker, or family member who has a wasteful spending habit? Turn in your friend and you both could be rewarded. The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) thinks it is time for you to come to your friend’s rescue. Not only can the poor decisions your friend is making now impact his or her financial future, but your friend’s penchant for poor purchases also may take a toll on your relationship.

Spendster help a friend sweepstakes graphicConfronting your friend about his or her spending habit is easy—with help from Spendster. First, the Spendster Help a Friend tool (www.spendster.org/help-a-friend) eases you into the intervention process. The tool features video examples from others who already have helped their friends, such as Chris Keith, a college student who turns in his friend, Kavan Cardoza, for his embarrassing impulse buys (i.e., forest-green designer jeans and a “replica” movie sword that doesn’t quite size up to the real thing). The tool also provides an email form that walks you through the intervention process and shares with your friend how he or she can use Spendster to remedy his or her spendthrift ways.

Next, the Spendster Help a Friend Sweepstakes (www.facebook.com/spendster) provides an incentive for you and your friend to face the situation head-on. The Sweepstakes asks Americans to take photos of their friend red-handed with his or her bad spending habit and tell us how their friend could improve his or her spending. Each entrant will be entered into a drawing to win one of 10 pairs of $50 gift cards—one for the friend to kick-start smart spending habits, and one for the entrant for being such a good friend.
