DENVER — As schools nationwide adjourn for the summer months, administrators at Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa have executed a constructive finish to the school year. The school recently joined the leading 900 colleges and universities in the U.S. to partner with the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) to offer CashCourse®.

This 900th enrollment marks a substantial accomplishment for the CashCourse team at NEFE, which aims to reach the 1,000 schools threshold by the end of this year. Once achieved, Amy Marty, manager of the CashCourse program hopes to, “focus on deeper school engagement, rather than on increasing the volume of schools.”

It is clear enrollment is accelerating; for in the past five years enrollment has jumped by 400 institutions. NEFE launched CashCourse in 2007 in response to the growing need for reliable, noncommercial financial education resources for college students. Today, the program is used in financial aid and other offices at colleges and universities—public and private, large and small—across the country. One of the nation’s most comprehensive sources of financial information for college students, CashCourse is free to students enrolled at partner universities where they can benefit from the online resources by registering on the website, www.cashcourse.org.

The website features articles, video tutorials, calculators and a financial dictionary that helps students build necessary financial literacy skills. The onset of financial troubles begins earlier and earlier, and for many it arises as early as college due to student loans and credit card debt. Thus, the program teaches college students financial basics such as saving, budgeting and debt management in a way they can understand and appreciate as they navigate the path towards eventual financial independence. Administrators and faculty can also take advantage of the available tools to build curricula complete with quizzes, homework assignments and workshop kits.
