DENVER—The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) welcomes two new members to its Board of Trustees. Patrick Bannigan, executive vice president and chief operating officer for American Century Investments based in Kansas City, Mo.; and Francisco Rodriguez, Ph.D., president and superintendent of MiraCosta Community College District in Oceanside, Calif., each will serve an initial three-year term on the 14-member board.

“The backgrounds and expertise of Mr. Bannigan and Dr. Rodriguez are an ideal fit to the other esteemed professionals that make up the leadership of our board,” says Ted Beck, president and CEO of NEFE. “We are fortunate to have such dedicated trustees to help us further advance our mission of empowering Americans to reach their financial goals.”

The NEFE Board of Trustees also announces that Alexander Gonzalez, Ph.D., president of California State University in Sacramento, Calif., will serve as chair for 2013; and Karen Vahouny, communications consultant and adjunct professor at Marymount University in Washington, D.C., will serve as vice chair.

Patrick Bannigan

Bannigan holds a bachelor’s degree from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., and a Juris Doctor from the Oklahoma City University School of Law. In his current role at American Century Investments, Bannigan is a member of the senior leadership team, which is responsible for establishing and executing strategic priorities. He serves on the board of American Century Companies and is a director on the boards of two nonprofit organizations: the Rx Matters Foundation and All-In to Fight Cancer.

“I am excited to join the NEFE board and look forward to helping the foundation pursue its mission of empowering educated financial decision making for all,” says Bannigan on his appointment to the nonprofit advisory group.

Prior to joining American Century Investments in 2012, he was president of RiverSource Funds and senior vice president and general manager of RiverSource Investments (now Columbia Management). In that role, he was responsible for managing the overall business, including the operational aspects of the investment management division.

Francisco Rodriguez, Ph.D.

Rodriguez was appointed superintendent/president of the MiraCosta Community College District in January 2009. The district educates more than 18,000 credit and noncredit students on three campuses in north San Diego County and through a thriving online program.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Rodriguez is an English-language learner and a first generation college graduate from a working class family. He has a doctorate in education from Oregon State University as well as a master’s degree in community development and a bachelor’s degree in Chicano Studies from the University of California-Davis.

On his appointment to the NEFE board, Rodriguez says, “I believe in NEFE’s mission and vision to promote informed financial decision making for all and I look forward to lending my voice as a proponent of higher education toward its further advancement.”

Rodriguez is active on several other boards, including the National Science Foundation Education and Human Resources Advisory Committee, and the board of directors for the Oceanside (Calif.) and Carlsbad (Calif.) chambers of commerce. He is on the advisory boards of the University of California Puente Project and the California Association of Latino Community College Trustees and Administrators, and is an advocate for Latino youth through Encuentros Leadership of North County.
