CHICAGO—On Wednesday, April 2, Ted Beck, president and CEO of the National Endowment for Financial Education, participated in the eighth annual Financial Literacy Summit co-hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and Visa. Beck was joined on a panel by fellow members of the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans speaking about effective methods of using financial literacy resources to reach the unbanked and underbanked segments of the American population.

“We need locations and opportunities to talk to people about how they can make responsible financial decisions. One of the important things that has happened in Washington (D.C.) over the last several years is that there is great concern about the competitiveness and capability of our population,” said Beck during his introduction. “Having a competing voice to say ‘take a breather and try to do things responsibly to keep ourselves out of trouble’ I think is a very critical opportunity because this is a way to get people to listen to a very important message.”

The panel was moderated by Melissa Koide, deputy assistant secretary Office of Consumer Policy for the U.S. Department of the Treasury and member of President Obama’s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans. The two other members serving on the panel were John W. Rogers, Jr., chair of the Council and chairman, chief executive officer and chief investment officer of Ariel Investments; and John Hope Bryant, founder, president and chief executive officer of Operation Hope, Inc., who also is a Council member.

The Financial Literacy Summit drew more than 300 guests to the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, with 1,500 people watching the live webcast live. Panel discussions at the Summit advance financial literacy policy discussion with senior government leaders, and explore what works globally and by different countries.
