Curriculum Recognized for Helping Teens Excel in Personal Finance

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, COLORADO—The Institute for Financial Literacy® has selected the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) as a 2007 recipient for an Excellence in Financial Literacy Education AwardTM (EIFLETM). The National Endowment was recognized in the Institutional Book of the Year for Children in the General Category for its contribution of the NEFE High School Financial Planning Program® (HSFPP).

The HSFPP is a seven-unit curriculum that teaches money management basics to young people during a time when they are developing habits and attitudes about finances that will influence them for the rest of their lives. The noncommercial program is available at no cost to all high schools throughout the country.

“Receiving the EIFLE Award recognizes the work of a long list of people at NEFE and in our extended HSFPP National Network who put in boundless hours to make this dream program become a reality,” said John Parfrey, director of the NEFE High School Program. “Because of these extraordinary efforts, this great program will find its way into the hands of millions of America’s youth for years to come.”

The NEFE High School Financial Planning Program is offered in partnership with the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES), USDA, and Participating Land-Grant University Cooperative Extension Services, and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), and America’s Credit Unions. The HSFPP has reached more than five million students in all 50 states since its inception in 1984. The program consists of a student manual, instructor’s guide and a dynamic suite of Web pages that offer a large, continually growing collection of resources, articles and financial tools for teachers, students and parents.
