DENVER—The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) announces a Commitment to Action at the 2014 Clinton Global Initiative America (CGI America) meeting, through which NEFE will develop 10 new retirement-focused workshop kits for community educators within the next two years.

Workshop kits are free, prepackaged presentation materials designed to help employers, human resources professionals, pro bono financial services professionals and other community practitioners conduct in-person workshops in their communities. The workshops being produced as part of a CGI Commitment to Action will present a unique and holistic approach to retirement decision making and will guide individuals with low-to-moderate income levels through choices that can optimize their financial well-being in retirement. Once developed, the workshop kits will be openly available online through a new section on

“Over the last 20 years, retirement decision making has been transferred to the individual in an increasingly complex investment and personal finance environment. This was made more difficult by the recession,” says Brent Neiser, senior director with NEFE. “Even before the financial crisis the traditional 'three-legged stool' of retirement security—pensions, personal savings and Social Security—was beginning to break down. For Americans of modest means, who are about to enter retirement, even one bad financial decision, wrong choice, or unforeseen event such as a serious illness or major home repair, could have devastating effects.”

Once the new workshop kits are completed and made publicly available, NEFE will conduct outreach to national network organizations of nonprofit groups, government agencies and associations with the goal of creating awareness of the resource so that more retirement decision making workshops will be conducted throughout the country.

In 2006, NEFE commissioned an academic literature review and convened a diverse group of retirement experts and thought leaders to arrive at a set of research-based outcomes, including a set of universal retirement income management (decumulation) guidelines within eight critical decision areas. These guidelines are the basis for NEFE’s existing consumer website, My Retirement Paycheck (, and will be the basis of this workshop series as well.
