National Endowment for Financial Education Wins Communication Award from IABC

Spendster Receives Gold Quill Merit Award for Social Media

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, COLORADO—The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) won the prestigious 2009 Gold Quill Award for excellence in communication, presented by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). NEFE captured an Award of Merit in the Social Media category for its Spendster project. Spendster.org is a Web site where people can confess their unwise purchases. The site (www.Spendster.org) and accompanying social media campaign work to help Americans identify personal needs and wants, and spend better so they can reach their larger financial goals.

For more than 36 years, IABC’s annual Gold Quill Awards program has honored excellence in business communication. The winners, chosen by expert judges, represent the best in organizational communication and their work exemplifies best practices for professional communicators.This year’s competition was sponsored by Towers Perrin and received nearly 1,000 entries from 26 countries. Of these, 122 were selected to receive awards— 41 Awards of Excellence and 81 Awards of Merit.

“Spendster started out as NEFE’s first, in-depth experiment with social media. In only six months, it is being recognized as one of the best social media sites and campaigns of the year,” said Patricia A. Seaman, director of NEFE’s Marketing and Communications department.

The Gold Quill entries went through two rigorous rounds of judging by a team of senior communicators from around the world. The final selection was made by the Gold Quill Blue Ribbon Panel of judges. To win the Gold Quill Award, NEFE competed with peers from 26 countries including: Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, U.K. and the U.S.
