Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC) Certification Sponsorship

The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) is offering a limited number of sponsorships in 2020 for qualified educators to pursue the Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC) certification with the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE).

Purpose

The goals of this continuing education opportunity are:

  • To educate those who working in financial education on critical concepts in personal finance.
  • To increase the impact of school and community financial education efforts by expanding educators’ counseling skills.
  • To enhance the use of NEFE resources and programs with the assistance of additional well-trained educators.

About the Accredited Financial Counselor Certification

The AFC certification process is intended to prepare professionals to educate and assist clients, students, and patrons, helping them set and meet financial goals and achieve financial well-being through counseling and education.

AFCPE states, “Abilities of the AFC:

  • Educate clients in sound financial principles.
  • Assist clients in the process of overcoming their financial indebtedness.
  • Help clients identify and modify ineffective money management behaviors.
  • Guide clients in developing successful strategies for achieving their financial goals.
  • Support clients as they work through their financial challenges and opportunities.
  • Help clients develop new perspectives on the dynamics of money in relation to family, friends, and individual self-esteem.” (Source: AFCPE)

Who are we looking for?

The National Endowment for Financial Education wishes to assist early- to mid-career professionals at colleges and universities, high schools and community organizations such as libraries who are engaged in financial education programming. Applicants should be full-time employees at either a non-profit college or university, a high school, a non-private library, or a community organization. Preference will be given to applicants who work with NEFE or one of our educational programs (CashCourse, High School Financial Planning Program, or Smart About Money).

What will we cover?

If selected, recipients will be sponsored for $1,400 to study for and complete the AFC examination. This will cover:

  • Enrollment fee ($50)
  • Online course and books ($650)
  • Examination fee ($700)

Webinar reviews, additional materials, and exam re-takes will not be covered. Exams must be taken by December 31, 2020.
