Financial Literacy Education for Adult Learners in Community-based Programs

This in-depth literature search and survey of current financial education interventions being used by financial education professionals sought to help understand what methods have historically been of benefit to different constituents throughout the United States. Project outcomes include an educator resource that details proven financial education techniques given for specific audiences. A database of educational practices is available to both practitioners of Adult Education and Financial Education by giving useful and effective financial education strategies in a centralized place.

Key Findings:

  • 95.5 percent of adult educators agreed that teaching should account for differences among learners
  • 98 percent of adult educators indicate that the purpose of financial education is to help students learn, understand basic financial information, and make informed choices
  • Many educators also indicated that they need to recognize family legacies of attitudes, emotions and beliefs around money to help them change behaviors
  • More than half surveyed said they use curricula they personally adapted from published sources or developed completely on their own, often to meet the needs of their learners, whose diverse circumstances aren't reflected in available materials
