DENVER—CashCourse and the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) announce Paul Goebel, director of the Student Money Management Center at the University of North Texas, has been named the 2017 CashCourse Financial Educator of the Year. The honor recognizes an educator whose efforts promote financial literacy on college and community college campuses.

Goebel oversees the Student Money Management Center, through the Office of Campus Life, at the University of North Texas. The center began in the fall of 2005 and has evolved into an array of several student programs, including online resources, workshops, seminars, personal consultations, and with certain eligibility, loan programs. The center served approximately 200 students during its first semester. It now reaches more than 9,000 students each academic year.

“My advice to colleagues exploring financial literacy and wellness programs is to just do it. Build it and students will come. Play to your strengths and research other programs,” says Goebel, challenging other colleges to offer financial education programs. “While we enjoy a diverse array of services and programs being provided by our center, I never expect any other campus to replicate our model in its entirety. Instead, we want colleagues to take the best from our program and dip it in their own school colors to meet their students’ needs.”

Prior to his current role at the University of North Texas, Goebel held positions in government, nonprofit and private sectors in program management, volunteer engagement and account management in California and Texas. As winner of the CashCourse Financial Educator of the Year, he receives a scholarship to attend the 2017 Higher Education Financial Wellness Summit later this month at the University of Minnesota.
